We were asked to study a motor for the compressor driving of the pneumatic suspension system of a high-performance sports car, which had to comply with the following constraints:

• Maximum containment of external dimensions: Ø < 70 mm
• Starting torque: ≥ 2 Nm
• Operation in temperature range from – 40°C to + 120°C
• Resistance to high currents (starting current 100 A)
• Quick response, given the need to lift the car in a few seconds
• EMC level 4

The solution and its advantages

A two-pole motor of small dimensions (L=90mm and Ø=63mm) was designed, with a starting torque of 2Nm.

The plastic material used for the brush holder was chosen to withstand high temperatures.

Much attention was paid to the optimisation of the brush holder components; in particular to the guide channels of the brushes that had to withstand the high temperatures reached by these.
